This year we have been so excited to celebrate our 20th annual Wards Children’s Awards, where we highlight some incredible children, young people, families and charities across Kent!
Our Children’s Awards focus on some truly incredible and inspiring young people. Over the years we’ve heard stories of young people triumphing against adversity, charities going above and beyond to support their community and families that have amazing courage and bravery through exceptionally difficult times.
This year, we celebrated nine incredible winners, and we want to share their stories.
DAISY CHERRY-MATTHEWS - Triumph Over Adversity (Age 0-5)
Meet the remarkable Daisy, a five-year-old who's defied the odds with unwavering resilience. Born with Apert Syndrome, she's undergone eight surgeries to enhance her life quality, all while managing a learning disability, autism, and severe speech issues. Despite these challenges, Daisy embarked on her school journey last year, radiating joy and courage. Judges laud her as a true beacon of hope and unwavering courage.
ETHAN WELLS - Triumph Over Adversity (Age 6-11)
Ethan's life took a challenging turn when he was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anaemia in 2021, necessitating bone marrow transplant and gruelling treatments. His strength shines through his third battle, battling complications and displaying remarkable bravery. Ethan's family, inspired by his uncomplaining spirit, hails him as the bravest person they know.
HALLIE ROBB - Triumph Over Adversity (Age 12-16)

At just 12, Hallie has already faced a lifetime of adversity. Born visually impaired, she battled Osteopetrosis and underwent life-altering chemotherapy at just six months old. Today, this Herne Bay hero is learning braille, writing her own stories, and dreaming of becoming a writer. Her incredible spirit earned her the Triumph over Adversity award for ages 12 to 16.
RUBY BROOKES, Triumph over Adversity (Age 12-16)
When Ruby Brookes didn't meet typical baby milestones, her parents, Jon and Jane, worried. After a formal diagnosis of Angelman's Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder with no cure, their concerns deepened. Despite developmental delays, speech issues, and health challenges, Ruby, a determined Dartford teen, has faced adversity, even recovering from double pneumonia and sepsis. At 16, she remains resilient, earning recognition as a 'true hero' by presenter Charlotte Hawkins at an award ceremony.
BETH CREEDEN - Young Fundraiser of the Year
Nine-year-old Beth's selflessness shines brightly. She raised an impressive £1,605 by completing a triathlon for Designability, a charity providing Wizzybug wheelchairs to disabled toddlers. Her cousin Ollie's experience with Spinal Muscular Atrophy fuels her dedication. Beth's efforts ensure more children like Ollie can enjoy the freedom of a Wizzybug.
THEO OAKLEY - Remarkable Achievement
Theo Oakley, despite being born blind due to Norrie Disease, has emerged as an exceptional musician and producer. He conquers substantial barriers, learning music and studio production skills tailored to his needs. Theo's passion and ability, especially in music, have left an indelible mark, earning him the Remarkable Achievement award.
BONNIE LOUISE CROUCH - Exceptional Young Carer
Nine-year-old Bonnie Louise Crouch's quick thinking saved her mom's life during a diabetes-related seizure. She's a dedicated young carer, providing crucial support for her family amid her mom's depression and anxiety. Bonnie's actions, including administering insulin and calmly handling the situation, demonstrate her selfless devotion and impact.
PUZZLES - Outstanding Charity
Puzzles, born from determined parents, connects families living with autism and various disabilities across Medway and beyond. This active tribe offers social support, assistance with education, and form filling. With dedicated trustees fostering belonging and understanding, Puzzles has become an Outstanding Charity, making a significant impact on countless families in Kent.
THE ROBERTS FAMILY - Courageous Family
The Roberts family, consisting of young sisters Lucy and Isabella and their mom Nikki, exemplify courage in the face of adversity. Battling cancer, they stood strong, with Dave Roberts enduring an incurable form of cancer while Nikki underwent her own treatment. Isabella and Lucy became young carers during this tumultuous period, displaying unmatched strength and determination. Their story serves as a testament to love conquering all, even in the darkest times.
